What IS Self-Care?

Did you know that the norm for communication is to NOT be understood the way you intended? That's right, when you communicate something, if you are going to assume anything, you can assume the other person did not 'get' you the way you meant.  This is because we all have filters and because language means different things to different people.  So, let's start with a definition of Self-Care!

My simplest definition of self-care is: Knowing and meeting my needs: Emotional, physical, intellectual and spiritual.

SELF-CARE = KNOW & MEET MY NEEDS

Now let's go deeper and flesh it out a bit...

I define self-care to essentially BE the PRACTICE of applied self-awareness in my relationships and my lifestyle.  The most important and first relationships I have, is with my SELF.  My lifestyle includes most importantly what I eat, what I focus my mind upon, and how I use my body to meet my needs. I say most important, because these areas of living are controlled by ME.  In other words, I get to choose what I eat, what I focus my thoughts on, and when and how to move my body.

SELF-CARE is a PRACTICE

Self-care is not a philosophy. It's practical.  It requires taking ACTION.  It requires consistency in the actions you choose, over time.  It is an on-going journey that I believe, has no end.  It is, simply, your evolution towards being a well-cared for human being - by YOU!

I'm sure I'll be coming back to this page often for tweaks.  For now, I hope that this definition communicates my use of the word and most importantly, that you grasp how much power there is in self-care!
